photo from Australia

Australia, 2000.03.04

To really understand this picture, you have to know two things about Australia. 1. Every year, Sydney holds the world's largest gay pride parade, which they call mardi Gras. The parade consists of a number of floats and marching groups, each of which have a them (the 2000 parade featured such groups as Swim betwen the Fags, a pun on the swimmer's advice to swim between the flags that mark the ends of beaches watched by life-guards). 2. Vegemite is - like the English Marmite - a spread for toast & bagels and whatnot. It is made from yeast extract. It tastes like butter mixed with roofing tar, and comes in little black bottles with yellow labels. The fellows who were marching with this float were parading about in Sodomite jars. I'll leave the fine print to your imagination (hint, the real jars expound the high protein content of the real thing). All very witty. I drunkenly took this photo from atop a couple of milk crates, which i'd taken from an alley in the CBD, mickey of bourbon in one hand, Sara's compact camera in the other, held aove the crowd. hence the inclusion of the Mazda dealership and the exclusion of the paraders.
