Apparently this large mountain-side shrine was built to turn the tide against the advent of Christianity and Confucianism in Nagasaki. Why can't we all just .. get along? Apparently I was as close to the top of the 277 stairs that lead up the place when I found myself at the bottom of this last flight, which was barred.
