For a volcanic island-arc, Japan sure has a lot of interesting rock types hanging around. It's this stuff that gets washed out to see one grain at a time that gives rise to the dunes on the sea-shore. It's unfamiliar to me, but I'd fall back on volcanic origins when presented with a rock from Japan.
