Wooden houses are still fairly common in Tokyo, though of course they're a tiny minority compared to the countless prefab concrete things that surround them. Thanks to the earthquake laws, it's difficult to make a new home with lots of large windows. Not so for the older homes, which were built according to the designs of the owners or builders, and which seem to have many more windows.
