babies go bye-bye

the journal of Michael Werneburg

twenty-seven years and one million words

Kokubunji, 2024.05.06

We took nearly a hundred baby goldfish to a local aquarium store today. Mari said she felt a bit sad, like we were giving away pets.

The fellow that runs the place will hand them out to kids free of charge, he says. I suppose if that fails, there will be some well-fed arawana or oscars or snakes. The chap told me that for their age, they are a good size and also well-shaped. I told him I'd been sinking two hours a day into those fish. He gave us some advice on raising them to have more color, including keeping them where they will get direct sunlight. He also said that when the rest get to about 3.5-4cm long, he'll buy them from us. Here's hoping!

Meanwhile, Emma seems pretty insistent that we keep a couple of the little ones. There are two with "derpy" eyes that she wants to keep. I have no idea where we'd keep them if we did. We'll have to see how it works out.
