farewell, old chair

the journal of Michael Werneburg

twenty-seven years and one million words

Kokubunji, 2023.10.12

My work-from-home chair has packed it in. When I assembled it three years ago, I had the distinct impression that the mechanism that attached the back to the arms and seat looked a bit iffy and sure enough, that's where it's come undone.

Next year my company will have a lot of furniture to unload, so I'm hoping we can buy some chairs that way. In the meantime, I've bought another inexpensive one.

This reminds me of a time in the '90s when my employer had a lot of furniture to unload. Some colleagues and I spent our Saturday with a rented truck delivering that to everyone in the company who bought things. Still not sure why we did that!

Illusions commend themselves to us because they save us pain and allow us to enjoy pleasure instead. We must therefore accept it without complaint when they sometimes collide with a bit of reality against which they are dashed to pieces.
