movie review - Slumberland

the journal of Michael Werneburg

twenty-seven years and one million words

Kokubunji, 2022.11.26

My daughter and I watched the original story about a young girl whose father disappears at sea. Leaving the lighthouse where they lived, she joins her uncle in a grey urban life (in a grey urban apartment). While sleeping discovers and enters a dream world and meets someone there she believes can help her reunite with her father. Things in the dreamworld are not easy, nor do they make any sense. But through determination she and her new friend are going to do all the crazy dream/nightmare stuff they must.

We enjoyed it. I particularly liked the humor and intelligence that the lead (adult) brought to his role.

Recommended.

rand()m quote

Immature poets imitate mature poets steal bad poets deface what they take and good poets make it into something better or at least something different. The good poet welds his theft into a whole of feeling which is unique utterly different than that from which it is torn the bad poet throws it into something which has no cohesion. A good poet will usually borrow from authors remote in time or alien in language or diverse in interest.
