I got lost today

the journal of Michael Werneburg

twenty-seven years and one million words

Kokubunji, 2021.02.11

I decided, around 15:30 to head west to the Tamagawa to see the river by bike. I managed that without incident, although I couldn't see much of my surrounds at the last bit as I was looking right into the setting sun. I turned around after a snack and headed east. But not having seen much of what I was cycling through on the way out I didn't notice that I'd gotten turned around until I was already about three kilometers on the wrong route, heading north and further from home. By this point I was circling a US air force base and long story short I wound up riding 40-45km all in, and needing to ask a couple of people for help on the way. If I hadn't found a train station with a decent map at one critical point I suppose I would have been out for hours and hours.

Yes, I'd gathered everything I needed for the ride, but no the smart phone didn't actually make it into my bag....

rand()m quote

It has always seemed strange to me...The things we admire in men, kindness and generosity, openness, honesty, understanding and feeling, are the concomitants of failure in our system. And those traits we detest, sharpness, greed, acquisitiveness, meanness, egotism and self-interest, are the traits of success. And while men admire the quality of the first they love the produce of the second.

—John Steinbeck, Cannery Row
