3° in Tokyo

the journal of Michael Werneburg

twenty-seven years and one million words

Kokubunji, 2021.01.31

It's 3° outside this morning, which means it's scantly warmer indoors. We've sealed the edge of the floor where you could literally pass pieces of paper in/out of the house but otherwise we're just running up the electricity bill keeping single-pane glass and empty walls warm. Madness! I can see my breath, and can't feel my fingertips.

Mari says that home insulation was something they only began to discuss here in Japan around the time we left, last time.

rand()m quote

The man who lies to himself and listens to his own lie comes to such a pass that he cannot distinguish the truth within him, or around him, and so loses all respect for himself and for others. And having no respect he ceases to love, and in order to occupy and distract himself without love he gives way to passions and coarse pleasures, and sinks to bestiality in his vices, all from continual lying to other men and to himself.

—Fyodor Dostoevsky, The Brothers Karamazov
