movie review - Life

the journal of Michael Werneburg

twenty-seven years and one million words

Toronto, 2019.03.15

According to my records, I don't have good luck with movies titled "Life". I see a review of a bomb with Eddie Murphy back in the '90s, and now this.

This one is a Sci-Fi story that starts on an Earth-orbiting science lab. A specimen brought back from Mars seems to contain a life-form. Before long, the amorphous and extremely over-powered creature has grown immensely and has killed just about everyone. After a long and doomed battle, the humans put in a last ditch-effort to save the planet beneath them from the unstoppable menace. I like what happened there, it's certainly not a happy ending but I think it fit the tone of the rest.

But I have to say there was something that put me off about this whole thing. The great cast looked uncomfortable interacting, and the whole thing felt rushed and obvious. I began skipping along when I felt that I understood where it was going, and I was not wrong.

Not recommended.

The statistics on sanity are that one out of every four Americans is suffering from some form of mental illness. Think of your three best friends. If they're okay, then it's you.
