Torontonians everywhere

the journal of Michael Werneburg

twenty-seven years and one million words

San Francisco, 2015.04.22

Today I decided that I'd had enough of the "keynotes" and went for another walk with my camera. Crawling up the many steps built into a sidewalk to get to the base of the Coit tower, I noticed a couple ahead of me in the distance. I caught up to them on some stairs zig-zagging up next leg of the hill, and we rode up in the tower's elevator. It turned out that we rode down together as well, and that the fellow was wearing a Blue Jays cap.

"Are you from Toronto?" I asked. It turned out they live in a condo about three blocks from my office. We chatted a bit, then I turned to descend the many, many stairs that traipse through a steep garden down toward the water. Half way down, I spotted a Canadian flag on a backpack. I told the woman, "You can't swing a dead cat around here without hitting Canadians," and told her about the chance meeting in the Coit tower. "Oh yes," she said, "I'm from Toronto too."

rand()m quote

It's difficult in times like these: ideals, dreams and cherished hopes rise within us, only to be crushed by grim reality. It's a wonder I haven't abandoned all my ideals, they seem so absurd and impractical. Yet I cling to them because I still believe, in spite of everything, that people are truly good at heart.
