learning to read new words

the journal of Michael Werneburg

twenty-seven years and one million words

Toronto, 2012.11.11

Ken's teacher sent him home with a reader on Friday. It's about "Grumpy Grandpa", and it came with three pages of instructions on helping a child read. I started to tune out at about page 1.5 and gave it a whirl without all of the instructions and found that it worked. During the highly repetitive language in the text, Kenny picked up the words "boat" and "fish" and "grumpy" and "I".

Then today, we read a very simple book that shows the several actions that a child performs throughout the school day. He's added "wave" to the words he can read.
