movie review - Super 8

the journal of Michael Werneburg

twenty-seven years and one million words

Toronto, 2012.01.18

This is a low-key Sci-Fi story about some kids who decide that something's up in their mid-western town. It starts out well, staying on point with a plot that mixes realistic characters with the growing realization that there really is something going on. But midway it begins to somehow fall apart. The estlabished characters start behaving differently, but in a way that's attributable to the strange goings-on.

Not recommended. And I kick myself for even seeing it, because just like the Sixth Sense ads gave me the impression that the councilor is a ghost, something in the trailer for this one told me that the creators didn't know what movie they wanted to make. I hope everything's all right with Spielberg.

rand()m quote

Naturally the common people don't want war: Neither in Russia, nor in England, nor for that matter in Germany. That is understood. But, after all, it is the leaders of the country who determine the policy and it is always a simple matter to drag the people along, whether it is a democracy, or a fascist dictatorship, or a parliament, or a communist dictatorship. Voice or no voice, the people can always be brought to the bidding of the leaders. That is easy. All you have to do is tell them they are being attacked, and denounce the peacemakers for lack of patriotism and exposing the country to danger. It works the same in any country.
