twenty-seven years and one million words

Collingwood, 2011.05.21

We drove to Collingwood today to meet Dad and Renate today. Unplanned delays made us nearly two hours late.

We'd planned the stops we made at the liquor store and at an outlet mall, and these slowed us down. So, too, the four-car collision that strangled traffic on the Don Valley Parkway - as seems to happen so frequently in central Toronto's only north-south freeway, the accident set us back a good hour. And then there was the hour we spent in Newmarket getting over Kenny's car sickness. Happily, the sun was shining and our stop coincided with a street fair that allowed us to pick up a nice Hungarian salami to go with the wine, so it wasn't a total write-off.

Kenny had gotten car sick because we'd used a clever attachment that'd come with the DVD player we bought to replace our broken netbook. The DVD player's gizmo was a simple net-like tie-down platform that allows the player to be held up behind a car seat. Great in theory, but between the stop-and-go traffic and Kenny's natural inclination to car sickness, it was a recipe for trouble.

But all's well that ends, and we got to our destination by about four. It kicked off a great long weekend with family.

P.S. Some of the towns on our route exhibited those telling "tiny town" traits: one had a dealership that had as a "featured car" a gaudy Mustang II. Not a classic Mustang: a Mustang II. 8^D
