rough night

the journal of Michael Werneburg

twenty-seven years and one million words

Tokyo, 2009.03.26

To prepare for the change in schedule, I'm helping out with tending to Kenny when he cries in the night. And last night was a doozie. He woke several times, to the point that I eventually gave up on returning to bed and just flaked out on the thin futon in Ken's room. He then awoke about every ten minutes for the next 90 minutes.

It was pretty tough, and it made the day a lot longer and harder to get through. But I think I handled Kenny well enough during the night. One of the hardest things is trying to determine if -- and how soon -- you should run in to respond, rather than simply letting him sniffle for a while then go back to sleep. I have no answers.

The fishermen know that the sea is dangerous and the storm terrible, but they have never found these dangers sufficient reason for remaining ashore.
