My father-in-law's camera packed it in. I did a bit of shopping, and determined that the Fuji A610 looked like a capable and no-nonsense model. It's a reasonably inexpensive and trivially easy-to-use model with a good-quality lens and a modern sensor.

He's enjoying it, and I've seen some impressive results. The quality of the images actually exceeds my expectations.
