hellboy

twenty-seven years and one million words

Halifax, 2004.04.09

Today was a beautiful sunny day, and the first warm day we've had, so I decided to go for a walk.

Two hours later, I found myself near a known movie theater, so I decided to do the same thing I usually wind up doing on sunny Spring days: I sat in a dark, air-conditioned space for two hours. I saw Hellboy. It was good, except toward the end when it was not so good.

Naturally, I emerged from the cinema to discover that the air temperature had dropped by ten degrees. I wound up walking back via a different route and was somewhat chilled when I finally got in.

Halifax is an odd town. 350 thousand people, yet everything—and I mean everything, except maybe some pubs—closes down on weekends and holidays. I needed groceries this evening, but I was SOL.

rand()m quote

Naturally the common people don't want war: Neither in Russia, nor in England, nor for that matter in Germany. That is understood. But, after all, it is the leaders of the country who determine the policy and it is always a simple matter to drag the people along, whether it is a democracy, or a fascist dictatorship, or a parliament, or a communist dictatorship. Voice or no voice, the people can always be brought to the bidding of the leaders. That is easy. All you have to do is tell them they are being attacked, and denounce the peacemakers for lack of patriotism and exposing the country to danger. It works the same in any country.
