movie review - The Warrior and the Princess

the journal of Michael Werneburg

twenty-seven years and one million words

Vancouver, 2002.07.22

This is a movie by the same (German) director as Run, Lola, Run. It also stars the same actress, Franka Potente. It's about two damaged cases who meet one another under a truck that has just run one of them down. A wobbly relationship begins from that unlikely start, and goes to many a strange and wond'rous stage from there. This movie has some of the same themes as Run, Lola, Run, but the characters that drive the story are very different. Most, in fact, are either patients or (dis)orderlies at a psychiatric hospital where the doctors seem to fulfil their duties without hope.

It's a bit of a challenging movie to watch, with some jarring cinematography techniques and a lot of perhaps a few too many loonies, but I enjoyed it. And it nagged at me for a couple of days, as well.

Recommended.
