movie review - Amelie

the journal of Michael Werneburg

twenty-seven years and one million words

Vancouver, 2002.02.09

This is a French flick, from Jean-Pierre Jeunet the director of Delicatessen, City of Lost Children, and Alien Resurrection. And you can tell; it's got something of the same slightly akilter feel that threads through those others (especially Delicatessen). It's also got a delicate pace, excellent narrative and tiny, almost subliminal supporting clips, and a wonderful joy-of-life. This movie hits a perfect note; I was vocally cheering for Amelie and her dreamer lover by the end.

I hope Jeunet makes more in this vein!

Strongly recommended.

It may be that when we no longer know what to do we have come to our real work, and that when we no longer know which way to go we have come to our real journey. The mind that is not baffled is not employed. The impeded stream is the one that sings.
