movie review - Notting Hill

the journal of Michael Werneburg

twenty-seven years and one million words

Sydney, 2000.03.15

This is a quiet flick about an American movie star and the Englishman she meets while shopping for books in a small district of London. It's a trifle slow, but is amusing and remains reasonably intelligent while aiming to entertain. It's paint-by-numbers rom-com for Gen X, I guess. I honestly have nothing else to say. If your gal wants to see this, let it happen.

Recommended.

Illusions commend themselves to us because they save us pain and allow us to enjoy pleasure instead. We must therefore accept it without complaint when they sometimes collide with a bit of reality against which they are dashed to pieces.
