movie review - Tin Cup

the journal of Michael Werneburg

twenty-seven years and one million words

Toronto, 1997.03.14

Starring Kevin Costner, Rene Russo, Cheech Marin, and Don Johnston, which seems to have been the point. It's about a loser golfer who can't accept that he must take less than perfection in life. His whole focus is on golf, where he plays to win and nothing less. Of course, he fails. Johnson seems to be around because he's the only actor Hollywood has who can be more annoying than Costner.

At times, this gets surprisingly cheesy, using awful Up The Creek type good-guy bad-guy crap. But mostly, it's entertaining. All that said, I liked it when the tone was holding together, and I found the cast engaging.

Recommended.

rand()m quote

In the wake of 9/11, we [in America] have made the decision as a society that we can never again create something in which we can take pride, for fear that someone will destroy it. Moreover, we must suppress any trace of individualism, lest someone have the desire to rise above the bland sameness that protects us. I have, alas, no idea how to recapture our courage.
