movie review - Jerry McGuire

the journal of Michael Werneburg

twenty-seven years and one million words

Toronto, 1997.01.14

The crowd went and saw this one. Tom Cruise puts in the performance of his life, by which I mean he actually acts. It's about an agent whose late night epiphany leads to his immediate sacking, and what happens next. Way too preachy, and also somewhat too long. But for once I couldn't see the plot of a Cruise movie coming from the third scene, and it is supported by memorable sentiments and good supporting roles.

Now if everyone would just stop saying that one line from the movie.

Recommended.

Illusions commend themselves to us because they save us pain and allow us to enjoy pleasure instead. We must therefore accept it without complaint when they sometimes collide with a bit of reality against which they are dashed to pieces.
